Roxana Albanese
Artista Plástica
Argentine artist based in Mexico. Her pictorial practice revolves around affective states such as confusion, desire, absence, or freedom, privileging the emotional over the programmatic. Each work begins with a particular emotion that translates into a word or initial concept, which names the series or piece and guides material decisions. The process is largely intuitive and open to improvisation; it prioritizes the affective over the programmatic, the gestural over the structured.
I am originally from Argentina and have lived in Mexico for several years. This displacement marked a turning point both personally and artistically. Far from fitting into a traumatic narrative, uprootedness appears in my work as a possibility for reconfiguration. The symbolic adoption of Mexican identity operates not only as context but as living material: color, urban texture, the rhythm of daily life.
More than a search for style, the practice is sustained through a permanent exploration of materials, supports, and techniques. The use of inherited textiles, fragmented papers, cracked wood, or found surfaces responds to a willingness to let the environment — and its contingency — intervene in the artistic gesture.
Painting functions here as an intermediate zone between control and the unexpected, between the intimate and the collective. It is not about illustrating emotions, but about allowing certain experiences to manifest in material form.
