Alfredo Sosa Bravo
Alfredo Sosabravo was born on October 25, 1930, in Sagua la Grande, Cuba. Considered one of Cuba's most important visual and design artists, he is a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and ceramicist, trained at the San Alejandro Academy of Arts in Havana, though largely self-taught.
His work is characterized by three recurring themes — nature, the human being, and the machine — fused into a complex aesthetic unity, marked by a bold and vibrant use of color. His ceramic pieces, entirely handmade, are each unique and unrepeatable.
He has received his country's highest honors, including the National Fine Arts Prize (1997) and the Félix Varela Order, as well as a gold medal at the International Contemporary Ceramic Art Competition in Faenza, Italy (1976). In 1993 he moved to Albisola, Italy, where he continued working at the historic Ceramiche Giuseppe Mazzotti factory — the subject of an exhibition dedicated to the master at the Havana Ceramics Museum for his 90th anniversary.
