Antonio Rojas
Antonio Rojas held his first solo exhibition in 1983 at Galería Magda Bellotti in Algeciras, becoming known shortly after in Madrid through successive editions of ARCO. He has lived in Madrid since 1986, exhibiting at the legendary Galería Fernando Vijande (1987) and holding his first solo show in the capital at Galería Montenegro (1988). Between 1990 and 1993 he lived in London and Rome, on grants from the Delfina Studios Trust and the Academia de España in Rome respectively.
His painting is built on a continuous exploration of the image and of the canvas as an autonomous space: architecture, landscapes, and fragments of reality are subjected to shifts in scale, perspective, and light until they acquire their own internal logic, with a clear affinity for the tradition of metaphysical painting (Piero della Francesca, De Chirico, Magritte, Hopper, Rothko) and the Madrid figurative scene of the 1980s.
He has received numerous awards, including the Premio Juan Luis Vasallo de Bellas Artes, the Premio Ángel de Pintura (Valencia, 2004), the Gold Medal at the Valdepeñas International Exhibition (2002), and a grant from the Academia de España in Rome.
